Four-wheel alignment refers to adjusting the suspension in all-four of your tires. A four-wheel alignment is typically required on all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles that have independent suspension.
The different types of alignment performed on today’s vehicle are front wheel alignment, 4-wheel alignment, and thrust angle alignment.
Wheels lose their alignment so subtly, as a result of the road’s slings and arrows, that it’s hard to notice. However, your vehicle will. It will use more fuel as it struggles with the road. Your tires will either wear out faster or show uneven wear. You’ll feel more of the bumps in the road, and most serious of all, it will not steer accurately, pulling to the left or right instead. However, these are easy fixes when you have a 4-wheel alignment performed.
An alignment improves the safety of your vehicle. Since it corrects the line up of the wheels, and by extension, the tires, all four will be in contact with the road so they will respond to your steering. And since it will no longer be compensating for the inaccuracies of being out of alignment, your fuel economy will improve. And of course, so will the ride. It will be much smoother. And your wallet will appreciate it too since your tires will last longer.
Manufacturer commendations vary as to how often a wheel alignment is needed. On the light side, some car makers recommend at least every two to three years. Others are warier, saying once a year. The best thing is to check your owner’s manual or have it inspected if you have recently hit a particularly fearsome pothole or misjudged how close you were to a curb. And ditto if you drive on some of the rough roads out near West Jordan or West Valley City.
