Still a GTI, But Built Better Than Ever

When the new VW Golf GTI debuted at the Chicago Auto Show, the first thing everyone was buzzing about was the change to the overall look and feel of the car. Granted, cars go through facelifts all the time, but this eighth generation seemed to find that happy balance of elevating its appearance while retaining its same charming spirit that attracts drivers.

Literally every exterior element of the GTI has been changed from the Mk7 to the current version. “The all-new GTI is a design statement; it merges a dynamic, sporty character with uncompromising functionality,” said Klaus Zyciora, Head of Volkswagen Group Design. The end result is a leaner, meaner, more aggressive-looking GTI that looks fast even when it’s sitting in park. The rear roof spoiler and twin tailpipes make the GTI look ready for any high-speed straightaway you put in front of it.

The revamp of look and feel continues on the interior of the car. Quite literally, actually. Gone are the buttons and knobs of the prior iterations that drivers would use to operate the air conditioning, radio, and other features. It’s been replaced by the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit with a highly responsive touchscreen. Drivers will finally have control over every single attribute of the vehicle with a simple touch of the finger. “Our central display featuring our touch sliders aims for iterative control and will be a huge leap forward for our customers,” said Zyciora.

The future-forward design choices can be seen throughout the GTI’s interior. New sport seats with integrated head restraints come standard, upholstered in an all-new design called Scalepaper that are fashionably forward. Drivers can also choose several different ambient lighting choices to customize the vibe in the GTI, a first for this line of vehicles.

More Powerful Than Ever Before

Just as you’d expect, the all-new 2022 VW GTI is being touted as the most powerful in the GTI line-up. It runs on a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection TSI engine that can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG dual clutch automatic transmission. Drivers will be able to rip it up on the road with 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. of torque, easily besting the Mk7 and its predecessors.

What reviewers and professional test drivers are loving (beyond the power, of course) is how the new GTI handles with a sort of effortless elegance. There’s no understeering issues or lack of precision here. The GTI knows how to handle itself on a straightaway, but it really shows off when you throw winding curves and hairpin turns in front of it.
