Getting Up to Speed on the Next Generation of Volkswagen Cars for Sale

In 2020, Volkswagen released their long-awaited freshmen effort in the electric vehicle category to American drivers – the VW ID.4. Considering it was the first time the German automaker had ever thrown their hat into the EV ring, drivers and reviewers alike were blown away by the finished product.

The Volkswagen electric SUV hit all the right notes in terms of design, range, storage, performance, and technology. In fact, the ID.4 was such a hit that it won the 2021 World Car of the Year Award, officially elevating the VW brand into the upper echelons of the EV category. It also didn’t hurt that the VW ID.4 was named one of Ward’s 10 Best User Experiences and landed on several editors’ choice lists.

The first couple years could not have gone better for the ID.4 in terms of sales and reception. However, as is the case with any successful venture, people began asking, “What’s next?”

Currently, the ID.4 is the only VW EV in the domestic market, and it’s been that way for the past three years. So, should drivers expect to see more Volkswagen electric cars for sale in the future?

When are they coming? And can they top the success of the VW ID.4? Let’s do a deep dive into the future of VW EVs.

Two New VW Electric Vehicles Are On the Way

You didn’t think Volkswagen would go the one-hit-wonder route, did you? The German automaker has big plans for its lineup of electric vehicles and the nation’s charging network. Based on what VW has shared so far, it appears they will spend the next few years rounding out their EV lineup to offer drivers more variety.

First on the release slate is the VW ID.Buzz, which is an electrified modern reboot of the Type 2 Microbus from the 1960s. Blending nostalgia with advanced technology, the Buzz is primed to make a huge impact in the van and large capacity vehicle market. The seven-seater futuristic van is estimated to get up to 260 miles on a single charge and 330 horsepower when outfitted with dual-motors. Car and Driver reports that the first wave of the ID.Buzz will be available domestically in 2025.

The other Volkswagen EV slated for release is the 2025 VW ID.7 – the first all-electric sedan from the German automaker. Based on the ID.Aero concept, the VW ID.7 is estimated to deliver 300 miles single-charge driving distance using a 77.0-kWh battery pack. However, when outfitted with an 86.0-kWh battery, the max driving distance for the ID.7 is projected to hit 400 miles. With an estimated starting MSRP of $55,000, the VW ID.7 is primed to be a major competitor against EV sedans in its class, such as the Tesla Model Y.

How VW Is Expanding the Electric Vehicle Network

Volkswagen continues to invest in the development of charging infrastructure to support the growing electric vehicle market in the U.S. Currently, VW is collaborating with various stakeholders to expand the availability of charging stations – both in urban areas and along highways – to ensure that EV owners have convenient access to charging facilities.

There are approximately 130,000 public EV charging stations throughout the U.S. Volkswagen has pledged to add thousands more over the next several years by leveraging strategic partnerships with those that share their commitment for sustainable driving.

Additionally, VW includes incentives with the purchase of Volkswagen EVs to further entice consumers. Currently, buyers of VW EVs get three years of unlimited 30-minute DC fast charging sessions via Electrify America. This means that new VW EV buyers won’t incur fuel or charging costs until 2026, which is a huge perk from a cost of ownership perspective.

Where to Learn More About the Future of Volkswagen EVs

Based on the expansion of the ID. lineup and charging infrastructure, VW electric vehicles are a significant part of the automaker’s future. In addition to the ID.Buzz and ID.7, Volkswagen has confirmed that an all-electric version of the VW Tiguan is in the works. If it’s successful, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that VW releases subsequent EV editions of vehicles from their traditional lineup of cars and SUVs.

Another exciting development in the VW EV space is the Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept, which uses autonomous driving technology that requires no human supervision. Although the Gen.Travel concept is still being tested, the finished product will provide travelers a quiet and comfortable alternative to commercial airlines.

VW is also working on creating more sustainable electric cars for sale that use recycled materials. Eco-friendly versions are planned for the entire ID. lineup, which will help Volkswagen reduce their carbon emissions by 40% within the next seven years.
