VW Coolant Exchange

Coolant Fluid Exchange Service Near South Jordan, UT

Whether you choose to call it a radiator fluid exchange, a coolant flush, or a radiator flush, it is still an essential maintenance service for your car, SUV, or truck.

How the Cooling System Works

Your vehicle’s engine creates so much heat, up to 1400 degrees F in some cases, that it could melt into a solid metal block if it didn’t have coolant fluid to lower its temperature. Short of that, it could lock up or boil over. But when the car’s radiator is properly filled with coolant fluid, its cooling system ushers the heat away from the engine and disperses it to the front of the car and then out and into the air. Although we rarely see it anymore due to the vast automotive technological advances of the last forty years or so, anyone growing up in the 50s and 60s may remember cars pulled over amid a traffic jam with clouds of steam billowing over their raised hoods. Why? Because their owners let the engine coolant in their radiators get too low.

What A Coolant Fluid Exchange Does for Your Car

Your car’s cooling system is charged with the task of keeping the engine at a constant temperature, whether you’re driving in 90-degree temperatures or 9 degrees, both of which are par for the course in our Salt Lake City area. (For this reason, some people call coolant fluid by yet another name – antifreeze.) You already know what will happen. The engine is allowed to heat up too much. On the other hand, if the temp gets too low, not only can the engine freeze up, but it will use more fuel than normal which means it will send more emissions into the air.

Good Drivers Keep an Eye on Their Coolant Fluid

Over time, the engine heat causes the coolant to break down. Also, acids form and rust and corrosion threaten the radiator. A coolant fluid exchange flushes this acid away and the fresh engine that replaces it protects the radiator because it contains chemicals that fight rust and slow down corrosion. Therefore it is not only imperative that you eyeball the radiator reservoir regularly, perhaps every time you check your oil.

However, in engines with over 50,000 miles on them, even though the engine coolant level has stayed the same, it needs to be tested to make sure it is still effective and look for signs of leaks and rust. If you are a DIY driver, you can use a test strip to measure the acidity, and a hydrometer to measure its freezing and boiling protection

When It’s Time for a Coolant Fluid Exchange They Come to Volkswagen SouthTowne in Jordan, UT

The question of how often a Coolant Fluid Exchange should be done does not have a clearcut answer. It depends on the manufacturer. Some recommend every 30,000 miles; others say its every 120,000 miles or every 12 years. And not to confuse the matter, but one car maker says you should schedule the first one at the 60,000-mile mark and every 30,000 miles after that. As for your Volkswagen, depending on the fluid’s appearance, and how often it is checked, and if you drive under normal conditions, every 30,000 miles is recommended. But if you are a loyal South Towne customer, one of our certified technicians will check your radiator’s fluid level every 15,000 miles and look for harmful debris and sediment it might be harboring.
