Why Check Engine Lights Turn On

The check engine light is turned on whenever the computer receives a code. However, those codes have to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is your fuel system. Your fuel system is lined with sensors that constantly sample the surrounding conditions. They have specific upper and lower limits on what composition the air should have, and when they sense something outside those limits, they send a code to the computer. Since so many things can cause beyond-normal readings in many parts of the fuel system, a diagnosis is much more than just reading the code sent to the computer.
