Getting to Know the ID. AERO, VW’s First All-Electric Sedan
And When to Expect This Electric Vehicle at Your Local Volkswagen Dealer
The Volkswagen ID.4 was the very first electric vehicle effort from the VW brand, and to say it met expectations is a massive understatement. It absolutely shattered them.
Among all its various accolades and “best-of” list appearances, the VW ID.4 was the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award and was recognized as one of Wards 10 Best User Experiences. Right out of the gate, the VW ID.4 eclipsed other electric vehicle brands that had long enjoyed dominating the space.
The bar was set, and boy, was it set high. That’s right around when drivers and auto industry folks started asking that dreaded two-word question: what’s next?
When you reach the summit of the mountain on your first try, that can put an automaker in a precarious position. Nobody wants to fall into a sophomore slump – least of all, VW. Since the release of the ID.4 to mass acclaim, the pressure has been on for the automaker to drop a sequel that improves upon perfection.
Although it won’t be arriving for some time, VW may have a worthy contender to take the mantle of “best electric vehicle” in their upcoming ID. AERO – their first all-electric sedan.
Getting to Know the ID. AERO
Volkswagen has a few electric vehicles in the pipeline…the ID.Buzz, the ID.LIFE, the ID.5 – but the ID. AERO will be the first sedan they release in the electric vehicle category. Everything we’ve seen from the ID lineup has always been future-forward in their design, but the ID. AERO takes this to another level.
This four-door sedan looks like it was inspired by automobiles worthy of a sci-fi adaptation, boasting clean lines and advanced aerodynamics – a spaceship on wheels. VW designers put the utmost thought and care into creating a worthy heir apparent to the discontinued Passat. It may very well be the most stylish sedan ever to be released under the VW banner.
Regarding performance specs and other key attributes, the details are few with many unknowns still at play. Here’s what industry experts are predicting about this new electric car:
- The ID. AERO will continue to utilize the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB)
- It is projected to compete against the Tesla Model 3 in the EV sedan space
- It is projected to use a 77 kWh battery
- It is estimated to be able to drive between 300 – 385 miles on a single charge; at minimum, it will be able to drive 275 miles on a single charge (same as VW ID.4 Pro)
- It is projected to be offered in RWD and AWD drivetrains
- It is projected to provide 339 lb-ft of torque and 295 horsepower (if using a dual-motor)
- It will likely be equipped with the IQ.DRIVE suite of features
- It will be offered in China first in 2023 to be immediately followed by a domestic release
- It will likely have multiple trim offerings
- It is estimated that the starting MSRP will be between $35,000 – $50,000
- It will include Carefree Coverage warranty
Much of the story surrounding the ID.AERO is still developing. The best estimate we have right now is that it will be released domestically in 2024. That means that industry reviews and comprehensive feature and performance specs should be released to the public sometime this year. As always, we’ll continue to keep you posted on the ID.AERO and all the other new electric cars in the VW pipeline.
