Getting to Know the VW ID.4 and How Charging Works
With gas prices being over $5 per gallon in some areas of the country, it’s making drivers reconsider whether they want to stick with their gasoline-fueled vehicles. For those that have a long commute, paying $70 or $80 per trip to the pump really adds up.
As the leading Volkswagen dealer here in South Jordan, we can tell you that interest in electric vehicles has really ramped up in the past year. Fortunately, we just so happen to have one of the best electric vehicles on the market – the Volkswagen ID.4.
In addition to having a full suite of convenience and infotainment features, the VW ID.4 is able to drive up to 275 miles on a single charge. Additionally, it was the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award and was recently voted one of the 2021 Wards 10 Best User Experiences.
With a resume like that, you would think that the VW ID.4 would cost an arm and a leg; however, that’s not the case. When VW engineers and designers conceptualized this electric vehicle, they did so knowing low cost of ownership would be a top priority.
The VW ID.4 has a starting MSRP of $41,230 (as low as $33,730 after potential federal tax credit), which makes it one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market today.
Even with attractive pricing and the prospect of never having to pay for gas again on the table, some consumers can’t wrap their head around that one major change in EV ownership – charging. Let’s dig into the details of that a little more.
Charging Your EV – Where to Find Chargers and How They Work
There are three main types of charging options for electric vehicles: home charging (type 1), public charging (type 2), and direct current (DC) fast charging.
A 120-volt type 1 home charger will give drivers approximately 3 to 5 miles per hour of charging. A 240-volt type 2 charger will provide up to 80 miles per hour of charging. Type 2 chargers are the most common type of charger out there. Finally, a DC fast charger will replenish up to 20 miles of range per minute. They aren’t as numerous as type 2, but more are being built out every day.
The big concern most people have when considering an electric vehicle is if they will have easy access to a charger that will replenish a lot of mileage in a short amount of time. Fortunately, most major stores like Wal-Mart, Target, and Costco have chargers right on their lot. Many gas stations, malls, office parks, and other high-traffic areas feature them as well. It’s really not difficult to find charging stations these days. Visit electrifyamerica.com for an interactive map of charging stations.
Where Can I Travel This Summer in a VW ID.4?
As previously mentioned, the VW ID.4 gets up to 275 miles on a single charge. Keep in mind that mileage will be reduced slightly based on cargo weight and challenging driving conditions (ex: snow, hills). If you plan on taking a long road trip in the VW ID.4, it’s best to build in a buffer on mileage when planning how many stops you need to make.
For instance, trips to Yellowstone National Park (335 miles), Las Vegas (407 miles), Denver (511 miles) should all be one-stop charging trips if you leave from South Jordan with a full battery. However, if you’re carrying a lot of extra passenger and cargo weight, you might need one additional charging stop worked in to make it all the way to Denver.
Fortunately, there are DC fast charging stations all along the interstate to these three destinations. Simply hook up to a charger when making a pit stop for lunch or when hitting a rest stop.
