Time to Get Hyped for the Next Generation of Volkswagen Electric Cars
When the engineers and designers at Volkswagen were originally conceiving the VW ID.4, they knew it wasn’t going to be a one-and-done type of affair.
The ID.4 is merely the first in a long line of Volkswagen electric cars they’ll be releasing in the coming years. The plan was always to go the distance in the EV space. It was really a matter of how quickly Volkswagen could establish themselves as a major player in the electric vehicle market.
To say the VW ID.4 has experienced some success would be an understatement. Right out of the gate, our singular electric vehicle rose to the top of the heap by claiming the 2021 World Car of the Year Award. The presale numbers are so huge it’s practically impossible to keep them on the lot.
So, where do we go from here? What’s the next big thing in new electric cars?
The answer isn’t a car at all. It’s a van.
Get ready for the next evolution in VW electric vehicles with the forthcoming ID. Buzz.
A New Yet Familiar Face
Those who have long been familiar with the history of Volkswagen vehicles may feel a hint of nostalgia upon first seeing the VW ID. Buzz for the first time. That’s because the ID. Buzz is loosely based VW Type 2 Microbus (aka the VW Bus) from the 1970’s.
Think of the ID. Buzz as the all-electric reboot to the Microbus. It has many of the same retro design elements, but with a future-forward feel. And just as you’d expect out of a van, it’s perfect for big family trips and cross-country travel. You definitely won’t be lacking in the cargo space department.
So, what else do we know so far about the all-new VW ID. Buzz? Let’s review.
The VW ID. Buzz Will Go the Distance
It’s been a long time since the ID. Buzz was first teased at the Detroit Auto Show five years ago. It was just a concept back then, but now that it’s so close to becoming a reality we have more solid information on it. The look and feel of the vehicle are set, so the next big question people have is in regard to driving range.
As you may already know, the VW ID.4 has a driving range of approximately 260 miles on a single charge. Since the VW ID. Buzz is a next gen electric vehicle that has long been rumored to use a larger battery, it’s safe to say people should expect an increased distance from its predecessor.
One Name, Two Different Models
We’ve got confirmation that the VW ID. Buzz will have an American and European release. For the U.S. edition, the specs we’ve seen so far for the ID. Buzz indicates it will be offered in two different drivetrains. The base model of the ID. Buzz will be rear-wheel drive and offer 200 horsepower. The other ID. Buzz will be an upgraded model that runs on dual motors with an AWD drivetrain that yields 300 horsepower.
2023 is the Year of the Buzz
Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, has announced the official unveiling of the VW ID. Buzz will take place on March 9th, 2022. Expect plenty of fanfare along with a confirmed set of specs and features. The production version of the ID. Buzz will arrive from overseas in 2023.
