The VW Passat comes with a 2.0L turbo-four that shuttles power to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. This is a capable engine for daily driving, though many will prefer the power offered by the 3.6L V6 engine option that produces 280 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Like the turbo-four, this engine comes with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission that gives it ample acceleration and athletic handling.

The Fusion has a range of engine options: the base engine is a four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic transmission, however, drivers will need to upgrade to a 1.5L turbo-four and a 2.0L turbo-four if they would like as much performance as the VW Passat.

The VW Passat has a conservative look, with a few bold hints that keep it elegant and classic. The overall profile is balanced and soft, with some subtle shaping at the edges and chrome accents. The GT trim takes it up a notch, using a blacked-out exterior trim and a thin red character line in the grille for a sportier look. Inside, the interior is clean and functional, with a symmetrical layout and sharp materials for an upscale appearance, along with ample space and an available Hands-Free Easy-Open Trunk.

The Fusion is a little bolder, though it’s still balanced. The new model has an oval shape and character lines that help it stand out, along with the blacked-out, geometric grille for some visual interest. Inside, the interior is very clean, although there is not much cargo space, so drivers of this vehicle may have a more difficult time when packing for a trip.

The VW Passat scored well on independent and federal crash tests, due to its array of standard safety features and smart design. A rearview camera, airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes are all included, while advanced safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are available with an options package; higher trim levels include this technology as standard equipment.

The Fusion performed well on safety testing also, due to its excellent outward vision. All models are equipped with a rearview camera and parking sensors, but Active Lane Control, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control are only available with an upgrade.

Furthermore, the VW Passat includes an available Automatic Post-Collison Braking System; should an impact occur, it’ll automatically stop your vehicle in its tracks to prevent roll through collisions. The Ford Fusion doesn’t offer a comparable feature, so drivers run the risk of additional impacts after a collision.
